The Squamish Chief, also known as the Stawamus Chief, is a large massif of granodiorite characterized by three separate summits and imposing cliffs which tower 700 metres above the town of Squamish, British Columbia, some 60 kilometres north of the City of Vancouver, British Columbia. The "Chief" as it is colloquially known is considered by many to be the epicentre of serious traditional rock climbing in Canada, and many of Canada's finest climbers, including Peter Croft, have established significant first ascents on its walls. The Chief is also a popular hiking destination, offering routes up the back side to each of its three summits. Trails also lead to Shannon Falls, a beautiful precipitous waterfall southwest of the Chief's south summit.
