Lake Atitlan
Aldous Huxley called it the most beautiful lake in the world; it might very well be. Situated in the volcanic Guatemalan highlands, Lago de Atitlán is the deepest lake in Central America, with an estimated maximum depth range up to 340 meters (its bottom has not yet been fully sounded). The lake fills an enormous caldera formed in an eruption 84,000 years ago. It is shaped by deep escarpments which surround it and by three volcanoes on its southern flank; Volcán Atitlán, Volcán San Pedro, and Volcán Tolimán, the latter two being still active.
Lake Atitlán is surrounded by several towns and villages of the Maya people, accessible by water. A visit to Lago de Atitlán is one of the highlights of a tour through the Guatemalan highlands; it truly cannot be missed.
