If you think of surfing in Australia then Bondi Beach is generally what comes to mind. This is by far the most famous beach in Oz - and one of the most famous in the world.

Located only about 7 kilometers from the heart of downtown Sydney, Bondi Beach is a quick bus or train ride from downtown. Parking is tough to come by on nice days so public transportation is definitely the way to go (see link to bus schedule).

The beach itself is more then a kilometer long and has beautiful headlands on each end thus creating a protected cove. An interesting little fact is that the word Bondi comes from an aboriginal word meaning "the sound of waves breaking over rocks".

There are several good surf stores located nearby for renting our buying gear:

Surf's Up: 88 Campbell Parade. Ph: (02) 9300 9046.

Beached at Bondi: Middle of Bondi Beach esplanade, located beneath the lifeguard lookout tower. You can buy or hire equipment. Ph: (02) 9389 5836.

Bondi Surf Co.: Shop 2, 72-76 Campbell Parade. Ph: (02) 9365 0870.

Let's Go Surfing - Surf School Phone Craig Wachholz on 9365-1800. Learn to surf. Surfing and bodyboarding lessons, open 365 days for lessons and equipment. 128 Ramsgate Avenue, Bondi Beach.

Don't go to Bondi if you are looking for peace and serenity! This is an incredibly busy beach but is well worth a visit and is a great place for beginner surfers.
