About: “llfelong scouting enthusiast,boy scout troop 92, explorer scout troop 492 boscobel, wis.],scoutmaster boy scout troop 33 dubuque, iowa 1972-76. my uncle lynn marshall was a friend of wendell beckwith and so was i. fished in the thunder bay area in canada in 1963 with wendell beckwith. also fished with wendell beckwith at lake namekagon, lower ghost lake near cable, wisconsin and atkins lake in the late 50's and early 60's. also fished at o'leary's lake and other popular fishing spots near eagle point park, dubuque, iowa. wendell beckwith was a great wood carver, multi-talented person who loved creating from wood and doing it in solitude. i lived near the wisconsin river growing up and i hunted and fished for many years, i've caught many different kinds of fish etc. i graduated from university of wisconsin-whitewater in whitewater, wisconsin in 1980. whitewater lake is nearby[wendell's lake in canada[whitewater] was named after that. i won many awards for catching fish with mepps lures in 1976-1978 in janesville, wisconsin[walleye, northern pike, bass etc.] additionally, wendell beckwith[genius woodcarver and more,inventor of the working parts of parker pen]. wendell also had connections with martin 60[a boat motor co. that eventually was sold to evinrude] engineer consultant and inventor. further wendell introduced me to chippewa indians who live in a wigwam called guichi gumi[roughly spelled] the fishing was so good we fished 24 hours straight and gave most of our catch away[i cleaned fish for 6 hrs.] i also fished in spooner, wisconsin area many times at big bear lake, frog lake and even carved some fish poles because i was inspired to do by knowing wendell beckwith. i also fished off best island in 1963, wendell only had a small cabin and a tepee on a high point he called "harry". there were other cabins[wendell was caretaker] but they were miles away. during the 1950's fish were very plentiful you could catch big fish with just a bare hook. i also fished a great deal at port washington on lake michigan, wisconsin on lake michigan. my brother-in-law melvin butch behrendt and i caught king & cohoo salmon and lake trout on many occasions. we also fished lake superior in canada and the usa[both by boat and on shore especially at the side of the power plant at port washington, wisconsin. we were fishing onshore at lake monona[madison, wisconsin] the day otis redding[dock of the bay song] died when his light plane crashed on december 10, 1967.melvin carl behrendt and i fished many times on lake erie just north of erie, pennsylvania. i fished over 10 years in nearly half of the state parks in wisconsin including many lakes in jefferson,walworth and grant counties in wisconsin. Usually by boat or inflated raft, many times like green lake near ripon wisconsin where resides many great eating panfish. Many times, I caught trophy size northern pike near the bridge and dam in downtown janesville, wisconsin. i recently discovered information i had concerning wendell beckwith, "hermit of best island." Kevin callan noted canadian canoer and book writer visited best island in whitewater lake[wabakimi provincial park] noting a building called the "snail". ironicallly, my old map from the late 60's shows the snail as a huge wigwam about 200 ft. or more from the main cabin which kevin thought was the "snail". I saw the structure in july 1965 but it had no name and hadn't been completed. i plan to write a book about the eternal mysteries encountered on best island and some adjoining indian[chippewa] canoe routes.”
Interests: making cds and cd covers from scratch, outdoor sports[volleyball, fishing] also billiards. hiking in fairly smooth terrain mostly. i live within ten miles of pikes peak[14,101 elev.] in colorado springs, retired disc jockey and social worker.
